Well I was tossing around ideas of what to write about. I figure I can share what I know about Ooma, and how much I love not paying for home phone service. I was paying close to 60 bucks a month for phone service, thats a lot of wasted money considering I never used it. Like most I want to save some money every month. Enter Ooma, it is a stand alone VOIP system. VOIP (voice of IP) is in my opinion is where home phone service is moving. They currently offer the the 'Telo' and what I have 'Hub' and 'Scout'.
So let me start with the reason why I picked Ooma over any other option. I came across Ooma from actually looking up directions on how to change out the keyboard on a Blackberry. After really looking into it I was sold, aside from having to pay a nice chunk o'change for the hardware. But I fiured with the 220ish bucks I spent, I spent more then that in 6 months with my old land line service (you know the one I was never using). With that being said, as far as the hardware goes, the 'Hub' sits up with my ISP Router. And the 'Scout' is living on the wall in my kitchen. Yes my wife said we had to have a phone in the kitchen, on the wall, 1970's style. So we have a phone on the wall (70's style) with the 'Scout' hooked up to it.
Now you might be wondering, how much does it cost? Well if you bought it a while ago (by the end of last year) it was 100% free. But now they have a small fee, I really mean small. After the second year of service its like 12 bucks a year. And if you want Voice mail that's an extra 50 bucks a year. All in all its 65 bucks. Who can say they can pay for a YEAR of phone service for 65 bucks a year? Remember I said I use to pay that much in a month.
How does it sound? I have to say that it sounds just like the over priced land line I had in the past. The only thing that I dont like is with the 70's phone we have the people on the other end say they hear echoing. Well I tried everything I could. In the end the fix was just stop using it. We have a wireless phone set that has a remote phone that is in out living room. On the wireless phones, the sound is perfect.
I can say that when people ask about phone service I will always recommend Ooma. Why not have your cake and eat it too? Go forth my fellow readers (all two of you) and look into it. Its worth the cost savings, trust me.
